Millie Mats was created because of the experience we had of raising a teacup Chihuahua and a Labrador.
Gucci, our teacup Chihuhua, who lived until the ripe old age of 11 never learned the polite way of going out to do her business. Her vet explained that due to her size, a mere 4 pound, 8 inches long from nose to tail, our house was already quite a big world to her. We had to use disposable training pads all through her life.
Millie, our Labrador, came to our family when she was 12 weeks old. I remember the challenges of housebreaking a puppy while living on the 14th floor of a Hi-rise, where outside space is not easily accessible. Puppies need to do their business frequently and accidents happen. Disposable training pads came to the rescue. They were helpful but messy, costly and most of all, environmentally unfriendly.
Millie is now a senior and is showing signs of incontinence. We wanted a better option than disposables. We wanted to make sure that the mat would have the following features:
Truly Absorbent. A heavier polyurethane laminate that soaks more liquid is used as part of the 4 layers of material.Machine Washable. Can be washed without compromising quality. Most other washable pads are made of 95% polyester and 5% Rayon. Millie Mats are made of 70% polyester and 30% rayon, increasing the durability of the material. No Odours. I have a blood hound nose, so I know how important it is to include this feature.Blend In Your Surrounding. It is enough compromise to have a training pad in the midst of your living area, we want to make sure it doesn’t scream “look at me, I’m a dog’s toilet in the middle of the room”.
Millie Mats was born.
When Should You Buy Millie Mats
I’m cute but I am not perfect!
We all try our best to house train our furry companion. Sometime, despite all our best efforts, we still can’t get it a 100% right. Or, our lifestyle or work life prevents us from being able to follow a proper routine. I understand how some may say “don’t even start them on puppy pads” because they want to discourage this type of training.
However, it is your life, your dog, your choice on how to live with your pet. We actually would rather see them trained with puppy pads than given up to shelters because you can not cope, for one reason or another.
Using disposables seem to be the most convenient. Maybe so. But it slips and slides, it gets smelly and soggy, it ruins the ambiance of the living area. It contributes to the landfill.
So why not try a Miliie Mat. The quilted solid army green colour and absorbent material will change the way you live with your little leaker. Imagine a more zen environment. Ahhh…
I love tearing things up..sorry
Okay, we are not claiming that Millie Mats are indestructible. But, it has been puppy tested by many of our loyal canines with no damage to report.
Chewing is an issue with some dogs and if your pet can chew a chair leg, it would be hard to vouch for anything else : ). And, a flimsy disposable training pad is certainly fair game.
When you use Millie Mats as a discreet indoor toilet, somehow the army green colour demands dutiful discipline. No destruction allowed : )
Try it. Let us know how your dog gets along with it!
Love me forever
We all dread the passing of time when our beloved furry companion reaches their senior years. Unfortunately, growing old is inevitable.
When we have to deal with sickness or ageing issues like incontinence, our life’s routine changes. Giving our dog a Millie Mat to use as an indoor toilet will allow them to deal with their incontinence with dignity.
The absorbent material can hold 4 cups of water so it protects your floors, carpets, couch, any surface from getting ruined.
Less guilt for our old loyal companion and no costly collateral damage for us.
Where To Use Millie Mats
A piece of your expensive furniture is now a reserved seat for your fur baby. And when they give you their most adorable look asking permission to take over this space, we acquiesce. How can we say no?
Lay a Millie Mat on top and let it deal with the slobber, the hair, the eventual dog odour. Easier to throw Millie Mats in the washing machine than the chair.
Their Crate Is Their Castle
We personally saw successful results from using crate training to house break our own dogs, thus we are big advocates. At a stage when they still can’t hold their pee and have accidents, a plush cushiony bed can be ruined. But by placing a quilted soft absorbent Millie Mat for our fur babies to lay on as they relax in their den makes them more comfortable even in the event of a surprised nature’s call.
A trip to the beach, the park or a long road trip is so much more fun with our four-legged companion. But they are sort of magnets of the elements. Sand, mud, rain, sea water, wet snow stick to them and comes in to the car with them. Millie Mats can help contain all these and keep your trunk, car seat from the inconveniences of fun activities with your furry friend.
We may never see dog etiquette improve! But, that’s fine, because there is something endearing when our dog gobbles down their food and slurps water lavishly like it is their only meal. It is a show of enjoyment and appreciation for us feeding them. And what a mess they make! Millie Mats comes to the rescue to soak up the spills.
I’M LEARNING TO DO MY BUSINESS!
Train To Be A Millie Mat Dog
Getting your dog house broken is one of the most rewarding aspect of being a pet parent.
The first thing a pet parent will be tested with is patience. Patience to teach your pup proper toilet habits can be challenging. But, once done, it can be most rewarding because you and your dog have accomplished something through teamwork.
Position a Millie Mat where you want to designate as a toilet area.Puppies have small bladders, so what goes in, must come out..quickly.Lead the puppy to the area and use a command like “go wee”. You may have to say this a few times until they go.Once they go, say “good go wee” to instil the command in relation to the action. Lavish them with praise and offer a small treat.Repeat the process. Other times to do this would be when you see them sniffing around.
If you have trained your pup to go on disposable puppy pads and are now switching to Millie Mat Washables, follow the directions below:
Lay the disposable puppy pad on top of a Millie Mat to allow your dog to get used to the sight and smell of the washable pads in spots they already know as their toilet.Remove the disposable pad after a few days and when pup goes on Millie Mats, give him lots of praise and a treat.
FUNCTIONAL: Most important to look for in functionality is ABSORBENCY. Engineered to absorb and hold 4 cups of water to protect floors, car seat, bed, wherever preferred to be used. Most mats are 200gsm but we use 270gsm for high soaking absorbency. This is a BIG difference. If you find a leak, check to make sure your dog is not peeing on the edges of the mat. Even technology can not help this natural law of “missing the spot”.
AESTHETICS: To be used as a housebreaking aid & to be used as a car pet mat, incontinence pad, crate pee pad, bed protector, but the added feature of being incognito is just as important. Survey found that army green is an ideal colour to blend in aesthetically with any surrounding. No need to call attention to what the mat is for. It can just be another rug on the floor and not a toilet 🙂
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY: Machine washable and designed to last for many washes, saving you from costly disposable puppy training pads that add to the landfill. Odour is contained and does not require immediate washing (depending on dog and deed done).
SAFETY & COMFORT: Bottom is dressed with anti-slip dots to prevent mat from sliding and making it more safe when laid on smooth surfaces.Quilted top layer makes it a good furniture topper to catch dirt, dog hair, slobber or anything that your dog endearing leave behind for you to clean up., It protects your floor from food or water spills from dog bowls., It makes cleaning crate easier by just pulling out the quilt and washing. Great to line car seat to protect from dogs who get motion sickness,
